Āyurvedic Wellness Spotlight - July 2021

The first day of summer was over a month ago, but we still have many weeks of hot, sticky, summer weather ahead of us, the dog days. In āyurveda we call summer the pitta season — the season of fire and water (think heat and humiditiy). While summertime is often when we most want to be out and about enjoying life, we have to remember that the fire of pitta can burn us up, or burn us out if we aren’t mindful.

At it’s core, āyurveda is a system of living in harmony with nature. As such, āyurveda emphasizes changing our daily habits, rituals, and routines as the seasons change. Sure, we pull out the summer wardrobe and fire up the barbeque, but not much changes about the ways we care for our health and wellbeing as the season change.

When we learn to work with nature instead of working against her to fill our own desires we promote balanced energy, radiant health, and a sense of overall wellbeing throughout the year. Follow these 5 summertime tips to stay cool and balanced all summer long!

  1. Center your diet around cooling seasonal foods like cucumbers, leafy greens, zucchini, and cooling herbs like cilantro and mint.

  2. Stay hydrated!! But, avoid overly cold, or iced beverages. Check out last month’s spotlight on āyurveda for more info.

  3. Choose physical activities that are less strenuous, less competitive, and less goal oriented. Swimming, leisurely walks, a scenic bike ride, and gentler forms of yoga all help pacify the heat of pitta season.

  4. Don’t overload your summer schedule with too many things to do. Instead, take time to relax in a hammock or take a mid-day nap.

  5. Let go of perfection. Strive to be less demanding of yourself and others during the summer months.
