Digestive Support for the Holidays

The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes an abundance of delicious and indulgent foods that can sometimes leave our digestion feeling off. Thankfully, Ayurveda offers a wealth of wisdom to support and nourish our digestive system during this time.

One effective tool is to incorporate warm and soothing spices into our meals. Spices such as ginger, cumin, and cardamom have been traditionally revered for their ability to kindle the digestive fire, enhance nutrient absorption, and reduce bloating and gas.

Another tried and true ayurvedic tip to support healthy digestion, especially when we are overwhelming our digestive systems with heavy, rich, and sweet foods is to kick-start the digestive system before our meal. The sour taste helps to kickstart digestion by preparing the salivary glands in the mouth for receiving food, as well as starting the secretion of the digestive juices in the gut. Keep a batch of these ginger pickles on hand this holiday season and have a slice about 20 minutes before your big holiday meals

Mindful eating practices, such as chewing our food thoroughly, eating in a calm environment, and not multitasking while we are eating are simple but powerful digestive supports.

Incorporating herbal teas like peppermint tea and āyurveda’s favorite CCF tea can further aid in digestion and alleviate any discomfort.

By embracing these āyurvedic principles, we can enjoy the festivities while ensuring our digestion remains vibrant and balanced.
