The Āyurvedic Clock and the Seasons

In āyurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, there is a profound understanding of the interconnectedness between nature, time, and our wellbeing. Autumn/Early Winter (October - January): In āyurveda we think of fall and early winter as vata season. As nature becomes cooler and drier, it's crucial to prioritize grounding and nourishing practices during this time to balance Vata's dynamic and airy qualities. Establishing a relaxing bedtime routine, including self-massage with warm oils, can support deep and restorative sleep. Avoid excessive screen time or stimulating activities before bed to promote a sense of tranquility and relaxation.

 

Summer (June - September): As the days become longer and hotter, and the sun reaches its zenith pitta energy begins to rise, and with it a burst in productivity. Engaging in gentle activities, such as yoga or swimming can help balance the fiery energy of pitta and support digestion. Be mindful of not overworking or overstimulating yourself during this time. This is a great time to practice gentle stretches, enjoy a light dinner, and engage in calming activities like reading or spending time in nature.

 

Late Winter/Early Spring (February - May): Winter is characterized by colder weather, shorter days, and a sense of stillness in nature. The water and earth elements of kapha dominate. As we move through late winter and into early spring, the Kapha energy begins to melt away, giving way to the moist, sticky qualities of kapha. This is an ideal time for engaging in mentally and physically stimulating activities and enjoying light and vibrant meals. It's important to avoid heavy, oily foods, as they can lead to sluggishness.

 

By understanding the Ayurvedic clock and its relationship with the seasons, we can harmonize our daily routines with nature's rhythms. Aligning our lifestyle practices with the qualities of each season allows us to make conscious choices that support our physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
